East Java ramps up FMD vaccination after new outbreak

East Java, home to the country’s largest cattle population, has recorded a rise in FMD cases since the start of the year. Data from the East Java Animal Husbandry Agency showed that as of Jan. 26, the province had reported 839 FMD cases across 19 regencies.

T

he East Java administration is accelerating livestock vaccinations for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) following a fresh outbreak earlier this year that infected more than 800 animals and caused several deaths.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, goats and sheep. Infected animals typically develop fever followed by painful blisters, or vesicles, in the mouth and on the feet, which can impair mobility and sharply reduce productivity.

While the disease generally has a low fatality rate in adult livestock, typically below 5 percent, it can be significantly more lethal among young animals, with mortality rates reaching 20 percent or higher in severe cases.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said accelerating vaccinations was the most critical step to contain the outbreak and protect the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in the province.

“Vaccination is our most important line of defense, especially as East Java is the nation’s main livestock hub. Through simultaneous vaccinations, we aim to build herd immunity, protect our livestock and maintain economic stability for our farmers,” Khofifah said in Surabaya recently.

The East Java provincial administration has begun distributing 453,000 doses of FMD vaccine to 38 regencies and cities in the province as part of the first phase of its mass vaccination campaign. The central government has also announced that it will supply a further 1.46 million doses to help contain the outbreak.

The number of available vaccines, however, remains well below what is needed to protect the province’s livestock population, said Iswahyudi, head of the animal health division at the East Java Animal Husbandry Agency.
