Bali reopens overloaded Suwung landfill after massive garbage truck queues

Operating since 1984, the Suwung landfill is Bali’s largest waste disposal site, receiving between 1,100 and 1,200 tonnes of garbage daily, mainly from Denpasar and Badung regency, the island’s busiest tourism hub.

T

he Bali administration has reopened the chronically overloaded Suwung landfill in Denpasar just a day after shutting it down on Sunday, after the closure left dozens of garbage trucks stranded without a disposal site.

On Monday, the long lines of trucks in front of the facility began to dissipate as vehicles were gradually allowed to unload under the supervision of local police officers.

South Denpasar Police Chief Adj. Comr. Agus Ali Prayoga said the decision had been taken following a coordination meeting between the Bali provincial administration and officials from Denpasar city and Badung regency, which both depend on the landfill.

“The meeting was held at 8 a.m., and by 9 a.m. it was agreed that authorities would reopen the landfill,” Agus said, as quoted by detik.com.

Rinto, 22, a garbage truck driver who had been waiting outside the Suwung landfill since Sunday, said he welcomed the decision to reopen the facility.

“I’ve been here since yesterday morning and slept in my truck. We had planned to stage a rally today to protest the closure, but thankfully the landfill has reopened,” he said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
