T

he carcass of a male Sumatran elephant calf under 5 years old was discovered on Thursday at Tesso Nilo National Park (TNTN) in Pelalawan regency, Riau, whose population of the protected species is already in general decline.

TNTN head Heru Sutmantoro said the elephant carcass was found by a team of rangers patrolling the Lancang Kuning resort in Region I of the park. Considering its advanced state of decomposition, the calf was thought to have died more than a week ago, he said.

“The initial examination showed there is an infection on one leg, suspected to have been caused by a snare,” Heru told journalists on Friday.

“The finding is still provisional, and the medical team will conduct further examination to confirm the cause of death,” he added.

Heru said the case was a reminder that the threat against the already endangered Sumatran elephants was very real, especially from poaching and illegal traps.

“The national park is continuing to coordinate with various parties to strengthen supervision and protection of endangered animals in the conservation area to prevent it from happening again,” he said.
