View all search resultsThe disaster task force has set a target that all displaced person in Aceh vacate their evacuation tents and move into temporary shelters before Idul Fitri.
ome survivors of the Aceh floods say authorities have pressured them to leave emergency shelters despite having nowhere else to go, as the government pushes to dismantle all tent camps ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday.
Firman Banurea, an evacuee in Aceh Tamiang regency, said he had refused repeated requests from village officials to vacate the tent shelter set up in front of the Islamic Center, where he has been living since floods and landslides destroyed his home in November last year.
“The evictions are being carried out to create the impression that the government has successfully handled the situation and accommodated all evacuees in temporary housing,” he told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
“We were told to leave because there should be no evacuees living in tents during Idul Fitri, but we refused because we have nowhere else to go,” he added.
Idul Fitri is expected to fall on March 20, pending the official moon sighting.
Firman said that of the 45 families who had initially taken shelter in tents in front of the Islamic Center, only four remain, including his own.
The others left on Monday after being threatened with forced eviction by police and military personnel if they refused to vacate the camp.
