olice in North Sumatra arrested three people suspected of trading tiger and muntjac skins as well as other body parts of protected animals in separate operations in South Tapanuli regency and Padangsidimpuan city.
The three suspects were identified as RUN from Roncitan village in South Tapanuli and MN and RSP from Ranjau Batu in Mandailing Natal regency. All three are farmers.
South Tapanuli Police Crimes Investigation (Reskrim) unit chief, First Insp. BD Sitorus, said RUN was arrested when he tried to sell body parts of protected animals in Pasar Sipirok sub-district in Sipirok district, on Friday afternoon.
He said the police received a tip-off from the public and launched an investigation by detectives from Reskrim’s Special Crimes team. Detectives then launched a sting operation and arrested the suspect with the contraband consisting of 4.7 kilograms of pangolin scales, three pairs of serow forest goat antlers and a sheet of muntjac skin.
“The suspect was ready to sell the body parts of the protected animals, but police managed to foil it,” Sitorus said on Monday.
He added that the police also found a 17-year-old identified as RR at the arrest location. The police questioned the teenager as a child witness, in accordance with children protection rules.
“We carried out the process regarding the child witness humanely and according to prevailing legal procedures,” he said.
