S

everal regions across North Sulawesi were jolted by an earthquake accompanied by weak tsunami waves following a magnitude 7.8 quake that struck off the southern Philippines near Mindanao on Monday morning.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an immediate tsunami warning for parts of North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi and East Kalimantan after the quake, which occurred at around 7:30 a.m. Philippine time (6:30 a.m. local time in Indonesia). The warning was lifted several hours later.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari said the earthquake generated minor tsunami waves ranging from 9 to 19 centimeters in West Halmahera, as well as in Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands regency and Talaud Islands regency in North Sulawesi and North Maluku.

“Although the sea level anomalies detected so far remain minor, the BNPB urges residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant. People are advised to stay in safe locations, avoid coastal areas and damaged structures, and follow official instructions and updates from local authorities,” he said in a statement on Monday.

The earthquake was also felt across several areas of North Sulawesi, including the Sangihe Islands, the Talaud Islands, Manado and North Minahasa.
