P

olice have named a local businessman as a suspect in a mangrove forest encroachment case in Rokan Hilir regency, Riau, and brought charges against him in connection with a plantation that did not have the appropriate licensing.

Rokan Hilir Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Isa Imam Syahroni said the case developed from a police report dated June 6 alleging illegal plantation activities inside a mangrove forest.

“The report was filed by Daniel Pratama, chairman of Yayasan Peduli Lingukungan [environmental care foundation] or Yayasan Devendra, after his team conducted an investigation in Sungai Daun village, Pasir Limau Kapas district, on May 15,” Isa said on June 18.

“The team took the coordinates of the unlicensed plantation and verified it through the KLHK [Environment and Forestry Ministry] information system,” he added.

The verification results showed that the plantation was located within a limited production forest and must therefore have a permit.

“The [Devendra] team also discovered land clearing activities using heavy equipment with the steking bangkit system [spanning] around three hectares,” Isa said, referring to a plowing method that creates mounded rows of soil alongside furrows for irrigation.
