n the latest Civil War II comic book crossover storyline released last month, Marvel Comics surprisingly killed off one of its main Avengers, Dr. Bruce Banner, or better known as The Hulk.
The death occurs in the third issue of the story arc that was published on Wednesday, as The Hulk was shown to be killed by an arrow shot by fellow Avenger, Hawkeye. Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso told NY Daily News that this was a direction that they have never taken before. "So far only two things are for sure: first, all the superheroes are going to take time to accept the death of Bruce Banner and that his death will effect both sides of the conflict," he said.

In the story, Hawkeye releases his arrow thinking that Bruce Banner was about to be overtaken with rage and turn into The Hulk, which meant many casualties and destruction. The arrow was created by Dr. Banner himself in case he ever went berserk and gave Hawkeye specific instructions to shoot him if he ever loses control.
Civil War II head writer Michael Bendis reportedly has been preparing himself for the backlash that would come from Hulk fans ever since the decision was made. He released a statement saying, "All the [Hulk] fans are probably angry at me. The writers of Hawkeye have also been less than approving of the decision.”
When Bendis was asked about the possibility of The Hulk's revival in the future, all he said was, "The decision being made now will remain, we don’t know what the future holds.” (ken/kes)
