A

female wild elephant named Meli gave birth to a male calf in the Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) in East Lampung regency, Lampung, on Tuesday, Antara reported.

Park chief Subakir said the calf was born at 3:50 a.m. at elephant respond unit (ERU) Braja Harjosari camp, adding that it had been sired by a male elephant named Rendi.

The calf weighed 113 kilograms and was 84 centimeters long.

It was the second elephant calf born at the national park this year. In January, a female elephant named Wulan gave birth to a female calf at the camp.

Since 2019, TNWK has welcomed 14 new elephants.

Subakir said the increase in elephant births in the past four years was supported by several factors, such as clean drinking water, bathing places and wells, saying that these facilities were assisted by state-owned lender Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

“Besides food, clean water also determines the health of elephants,” he said. (jes/kes)
