rick Thohir’s appointment as the new state-owned enterprises (SOEs) minister has brought new hope for cooperation between SOEs and privately owned entities in the future.

During Wednesday’s handover ceremony, 49-year-old Erick said that he would strengthen synergy not only in SOEs but also in region-owned enterprises (BUMDs) and private companies.

“I hope we can all create a healthy ecosystem for SOEs, BUMDs and private entities to collaborate and compete on the global stage,” he said during his speech at the SOE Ministry building in Jakarta.

His intention to build a stronger relationship with private companies brings new hope for many private companies seeking to take part in the country’s infrastructure development.

The son of former Astra International executive Teddy Thohir and brother of Garibaldi Thohir, president director coal mining firm Adaro Energy, Erick is well connected in Indonesia’s business circles. He owns one the country’s biggest media conglomerates, Mahaka Group, whose businesses include newspapers, digital media, radio and advertising.

Erick’s journey in the media world also extends beyond his own company as he, along with tycoon Aburizal Bakrie’s son, Anindya Bakrie, founded free-to-air television channel tvOne and news site Viva News in 2008.

Erick also has links with the sports world. He has invested in and owned several sports clubs, including notable Italian soccer club Inter Milan and Indonesian basketball club Satria Muda.
