Despite controversial arrests and using excessive force to quell protests, Gatot is considered to have been successful in maintaining security in the capital.
fter securing the capital during a tumultuous political year, former Jakarta Police chief Comr. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono has been named the new National Police deputy chief, replacing Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto who is entering retirement.
According to a telegram issued by the National Police on Dec. 20, Gatot replaced Ari, who retired on Jan. 1, while former West Nusa Tenggara Police chief Insp. Gen. Nana Sudjana has been installed as the new Jakarta Police chief.
With his new position, Gatot will work alongside National Police chief Gen. Idham Aziz, who also once served as Jakarta Police chief.
“I will be standing behind the National Police chief, supporting all of his policies. That’s my target,” Gatot told media after his inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.
Having graduated from the National Police Academy in 1988, Gatot, who is now 54 years old, has vast experience in investigations. Throughout his career, Gatot has been trusted with important positions in the Police body. He previously served as assistant to the police for planning and budgetary affairs in 2018 and expert staff on socioeconomic affairs to the National Police chief in 2017.
Gatot also achieved his doctoral degree in criminology from the University of Indonesia in 2015.
When serving as Jakarta Police chief starting January 2019, he was responsible for maintaining security in the capital during the legislative and presidential elections, the announcement of the election results and the inauguration of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and the new batch of lawmakers at the House of Representatives.
