T

he Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) has confirmed the exclusion of athletes from Israel for the upcoming world artistic gymnastics championship in Jakarta, after the government barred the team from entering the country.

During a press briefing on Friday, FGI chair Ita Yuliati said the decision to expel Israel from the tournament came after the Indonesian federation informed the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) of its position during an executive committee meeting in Switzerland the day prior.

“FIG has officially told me through a phone call this morning that it supports the Indonesian government. We have confirmed that Israel will not take part in this event,” Ita said.

FIG President Morinari Watanabe has yet to provide a statement. Yet, Ita said he is expecting to fly to Jakarta and arrive in the capital on Saturday “to settle the matter”.

Since being appointed to host the 53rd edition of the international tournament, Ita is said to have informed the FIG that Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and that adjustments might be needed to have taken place.

She went on to say that the FGI’s stance on Israel participation aligned with the government.
