The African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs with almost 100 percent case fatality but harmless to humans and other animals. There are a number of reasons why these diseases should be a major concern for the Indonesian government and people.
Developing a common understanding on the relation between environmental conservation and peace while recognizing that these two are interlinked will help decisionmakers prevent human-wildlife conflict and maintain harmony in Aceh and elsewhere in Indonesia.
Indeed, fire in “rain” forests, is a new major risk to the orangutan ecosystem. Some climate-habitat modeling indicates large amounts of orangutan habitat will become unsuitable due to climate change, a three- to five-fold greater decline in habitat than that anticipated from deforestation alone.
There are some clear threats to orangutans. One of them is massive forest fires. In Sumatra and Kalimantan, hot spots first identified in March have been increasing over the last month. Unfortunately, this is a routine occurrence every year, especially around the peak of the dry season. The hot spots are increasing in number and getting closer to orangutan habitats.
