President Prabowo Subianto is pushing for budget efficiency, which is expected to save around Rp 300 trillion (US$18.36 billion) and could even reach Rp 750 trillion, to create enough fiscal space to fund his signature programs such as the free nutritious meals program and the new Danantara sovereign wealth fund. On the other hand, this austerity measure is feared to undermine the morale of government employees, who will see their pay drop significantly.
President Prabowo Subianto refuted claims that budget cuts for ministries and agencies would impact civil servant salaries. Previous reports suggested that some ministries and agencies have already laid off contract workers because of budget constraints.
Finance Minister Sri Muyani has increased the transfer of allocated funds to regions for the year of 2024. Under the new policy, the funds will amount to Rp 857.59 trillion (US$54 billion), an increase from the Rp 814.72 trillion allocated this year.
