Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD said on Wednesday that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had named Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo a suspect over alleged malfeasance. The news came after KPK investigators searched Syarul’s official residence and office in Jakarta, as well as his houses in Makassar, South Sulawesi, while he was on a working visit to Europe last week.
AGO investigators have again questioned the former trade minister in connection with an ongoing graft probe, specifically over the export policies he imposed last year that led to a nationwide cooking oil shortage.
Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was arrested at his home in Lahore Saturday, police and officials said, after a court in the capital found him guilty of graft and sentenced him to three years in jail.
Recent developments in the investigation of a corruption case that has been blamed for contributing to a domestic cooking oil shortage last year has led to Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto being questioned by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO). Prior to Airlangga’s interrogation, three palm oil companies had been named new suspects in the case.
The KPK named on Wednesday five suspects in the case, including Basarnas head Air Vice Marshal Henri Alfiandi and the agency’s administrative coordinator, Lt. Col. Afri Budi Cahyanto. Investigators have accused Henri of accepting kickbacks pertaining to procurement in the rescue agency between 2021 and 2023 totaling Rp 88.3 billion (US$5.9 million).
Speaking during his inaugural press briefing earlier this week, Mahfud said he would only stick to facts and evidence gathered from the Attorney General's Office (AGO), which is currently investigating the case.
During a meeting with House Commission XI on Monday, the embattled minister outlined some of the institutional changes underway, including improved mechanisms and access, as well as communication training for tax and customs officers.
