Critics have predicted that Indonesia will see a surge in people downgrading their national health insurance plans following a decision by the government to increase premiums, saying it will hinder access to health care for lower class policyholders.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says its study of the finances of the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan), which runs the national health insurance system, shows it could save as much Rp 12.2 trillion (US$833 million) by enforcing better insurance claim management.
The audit report did not have elements of confidentiality as regulated under articles 6 and 17 of Law No. 14/2008 on public information, which has given liability to any public agencies in central government and local administration to provide open access to public information.
