View all search resultsThe Banjarbaru chapters of leading press associations have called on the police to thoroughly investigate a "single-vehicle crash" that allegedly led to the death of a 25 year-old female journalist, including the possibility of foul play.
"Data from the index reveals 321 incidents of violence against 167 journalists throughout 2024, highlighting the persistent gaps in journalist protection and the urgent need for stronger safeguards," East Java Occupational Safety and Health Council deputy chair Edi Priyanto said on Wednesday.
Rico, a journalist with the police-owned Tribarata TV, was asleep when the fire broke out in his home on June 27 of last year. The blaze claimed his life, along with the lives of his wife, their 12-year-old son and 3-year-old grandchild.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Jakarta chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI Jakarta) and the Legal Aid Institute for Press (LBH Pers) urged the police to arrest the perpetrators and charge them under the group violence or vandalism articles of the Criminal Code as well as the Press Law that stipulates the protection of journalists in conducting their work.
The police are pursuing another individual who allegedly ordered the two arrested suspects to burn down the house of a journalist and his family in Karo regency, North Sumatra. The journalist and his family died in the fire, opening the possibility that more suspects may be named in the case.
