During a plenary session at the Senayan Legislative Complex in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, House Speaker Puan Maharani of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) asked lawmakers for their approval of a list of justice candidates submitted by Commission III. All attending members consented to the appointments.
Announced on May 9, the latest wave of judge reassignments launched by the Supreme Court affected 41 judges in district and high courts across the country, triggered by recent arrests of judges in various bribery cases.
The commission has found evidence that the judges violated the code of ethics for acquitting Gregorius Ronald Tannur, a defendant accused of killing his girlfriend in East Java, following a probe into the trial and the case.
Recent court rulings overturning or reducing otherwise hefty penalties for corruption have weakened the antigraft movement, which has languished since efforts to dismantle the authority of the Corruption Eradication Commission.
