The newly established Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry is mulling over a plan to revive the national examination in a bid to boost students’ motivation to learn after various reports indicating a decline in the country’s academic performance following the abolition of the exam in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following a decision to cancel the national exam for elementary, junior high and high school students because of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed the Education Ministry to seize the opportunity to overhaul primary and secondary education.
Six provinces across the country have postponed the national exam amid the government's call for social distancing and suggestion to allow students to study at home. Meanwhile, the 28 other provinces march on with the exams as scheduled.
