View all search resultsSudewo, the regent of Pati in Central Java whose name made headlines last August after he became the target of local tax protests, has been named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in an alleged corruption case pertaining to the appointment of village officials.
The Rote Ndao Police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) detained seven Chinese nationals on board a suspicious vessel that drifted into the waters off Ndana Island in Ndao regency on Sunday. Also detained were three Indonesian crew members from Southeast Sulawesi.
After the questioning, the Pati Regent claimed he had not received any illicit money from the bribery case pertaining to the construction and maintenance of railways in Central Java, saying that the money seized by the KPK was his paycheck as a lawmaker.
Observers have pointed to arrogant attitudes shown by local leaders and a lack of meaningful participation in discussions on tax-related policies as being among the causes of recent public protests on tax rise in various regions across the country.
