View all search resultsThe search for the missing passengers of the ill-fated Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry, which sank last week in the Bali Strait, has continued to its fifth day after rescuers found wreckage of the vessel a day before.
The ferry carrying at least 65 people, including passengers and crew, was making a five-kilometre (3.2-mile) crossing from eastern Java island to Bali when it tilted and sank in bad weather late Wednesday, witnesses and officials said.
According to authorities, the victims and 10 others departed from Nenek Island at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday to play in a soccer match on Setokok Island. However, during the journey, their longboat was struck by strong waves and capsized.
Brazilian netizens have questioned the competence of the rescue teams and criticized what they saw as a lack of proper equipment to carry out the operation. Some went as far as to claim that Marins did not die from the fall itself, but as a result of the delayed rescue efforts.
Local fishermen aboard the Duta Lestari 08 spotted the American man, waving and calling for help after drifting overnight from Nusa Lembongan on a Jet Ski that had run out of fuel, and safely delivered him into the hands of SAR personnel near Uluwatu.
Monitoring data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources show that cracks and fractures in the surrounding cliffs have now extended beyond four meters, highlighting an escalating risk of additional landslides.
Triadi Atmono, head of the Trenggalek Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall that persisted from Sunday into Monday. “The landslide buried three houses and damaged seven others, impacting 10 families and displacing 30 individuals,” he said.
