The emphasis by Papuan separatists on human rights in contesting the controversial history of Papuan integration into Indonesia raises questions about how Indonesian authorities should best handle unrest and conflict in the region, a panel discussion has heard.
Indonesian authorities have arrested Papuan separatist leader Victor Yeimo over accusations that he orchestrated some of the most serious civil unrest in decades that broke out in 2019, the National Police said on Monday.
“There has been heavy fighting at the Myanmar army outpost opposite Mae Sam Laep," said a provincial official from Mae Hong Son. "Our security officials are assessing the situation but so far there has been no report of impact on Thai side."
Those ethnic groups have long fought the military in seeking greater local autonomy in the Buddhist-majority but multiethnic country. Now some of the groups are providing protection to the protesters or attacking military bases.
Trudeau, speaking to the Indian community in Canada, said this week that he was concerned about the farmers, most of them from the Sikh-dominated Indian state of Punjab, camped out on the outskirts of Delhi in a protest against farm reforms.
