View all search resultsThe swelling trade and current account deficits are a serious matter for the country’s economy as it will negatively affect the rupiah’s performance and the country’s resistance to the external pressure triggered by global economic uncertainty, economists say.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has blamed the global economic slowdown for November's widening trade deficit, which was recorded at US$2.05 billion, an increase from the $1.82 billion deficit recorded in the previous month.
The rupiah fell to Rp 14,620 per United States dollar at 1:29 p.m. on Monday, weakening by 0.27 percent from its position on Friday, according to the foreign exchange spot market, after Statistics Indonesia (BPS) announced that Indonesia posted a trade deficit in November.
