The Communications and Digital Ministry’s newly implemented content rating system for video games has come in for criticism for its arbitrary age classification, prompting concerns among players and developers about the availability of games in Indonesia.
The move comes after the 2023 release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, co-produced with major United States animation studio Illumination, boosted sales of games in the franchise after becoming a record-breaking global hit.
"We try to portray firefighting in the positive light that it deserves. [...] We do hope that we can inspire young people to get into the fire service" or even just learn about surviving fire's dangers as a civilian, the developers said.
The communications ministry is drafting a gaming industry regulation that requires foreign developers to have a local presence and carries certain sanctions, but local developers say that could have the opposite effect of stifling industry growth and hampering global access.
