View all search resultsFor many years, vocational school (SMK) students have endured a stigma as troublemakers. They are also often associated with street brawls and other cases of juvenile delinquency; the public tends to look down on them and vocational schools in general compared to students of private or state high schools.
The government plans to revitalize 550 SMKs by the end of the year, having allocated Rp 4.3 trillion (US$304.9 million) for the program following the revitalization of 300 vocational schools last year.

Unemployment rate for graduates of vocational high schools, which are meant to tailor students for specific jobs, is most alarming at 8.63 percent in February 2019, compared with 6.24 percent for university student graduates and 6.78 percent for high school graduates.
