View all search resultsThe yen strengthened towards the nearly seven-month high touched against the dollar on Tuesday as traders exited short positions in the Japanese currency amid expectations for faster Bank of Japan interest rate hikes and a potential rush of repatriation of Japanese capital.
Iran remains under sweeping US and international sanctions, and it has yet to reach a peace deal to end the current conflict with the US and Israel, giving Tehran added incentive to seek alternative financial channels outside the dollar system.
Evi Fitriani, an international relations expert at the University of Indonesia, said wars had long been driven by competition over territory and resources, but today's conflicts were increasingly shaped by globalization and economic interdependence.
For much of the past week, Indonesia's two most powerful law enforcement institutions, the National Police and the Attorney General's Office (AGO), appeared locked in open confrontation, complete with dueling corruption probes and troops guarding a prosecutor's house. That confrontation now looks to be ending in retreat rather than resolution.
"POTUS is absolutely right. Whoever provides secure and safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service. Iran has always been the GUARDIAN of the Strait and will remain so FOREVER. 20% is of course too much. We will be fair," Tehran's top diplomat wrote, in a social media post.
"You know very well that not only do we not have any enmity with your country, but we also love you, the noble people, who understand the pain and oppression of the Palestinian people more than any other nation," the IRGC said in a statement carried by Fars News.
