Indonesian hospital ship KRI Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat is on its way home after delivering humanitarian aid to Egypt for Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.
he Indonesian Navy hospital ship KRI Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat is returning home after unloading its cargo of humanitarian aid for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip at El Arish Port in Egypt, the Indonesian Navy said in a press release on Saturday.
The hospital ship left El Arish Port on Saturday after arriving on Feb. 13 and was given only four days until Friday, to unload its cargo of humanitarian aid.
After being grouped and wrapped according to its category, the humanitarian aid was then transported by the Egyptian Red Crescent through the Rafah border for distribution to refugees in Gaza.
Indonesia Defense Attaché in Cairo Col. Aria Sanggita Saleh sent off the hospital ship alongside representatives from the Egyptian military.
The trip home is expected to take three weeks, including a stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to allow Muslim crew members to perform the umrah (minor haj).
Sailing under the Egypt Goodwill/Port Call 2024 mission, the hospital ship was only able to send humanitarian aid instead of serving as a hospital ship as Indonesia initially planned.
The complete medical facilities onboard did not go to waste, however, as medical personnel had the chance to perform their duties by treating a wounded sailor on Thursday.
