ietnam’s Communist Party general secretary To Lam received a warm welcome at Jakarta’s State Palace on Monday, in his first visit to Indonesia since the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto late last year and marking the 70th anniversary of Vietnam-Indonesia relations.
Touching down at Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta on Sunday, the 67-year-old politician and former president of Vietnam was greeted with a formal honor guard, alongside a musical and gun salute performed by members of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
On Monday, he arrived at the State Palace accompanied by his wife Ngo Phuong Ly, to a ceremonial welcome featuring a 21-gun salute and a performance by cadets. This was followed by a closed-door meeting with President Prabowo, in which they discussed several strategic areas of cooperation.
Among the high-ranking Indonesian officials attending the meeting were Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.
Monday’s meeting was the second between the two leaders, following Prabowo’s trip to Vietnam last September when he was still serving as the country’s defense minister.
Prabowo, in his statement after the assembly, expressed his admiration for the resilience of the Vietnamese people and emphasized the desire to strengthen both countries’ bilateral relationship as fellow “former-colonized” Southeast Asian nations.
