Binus listed as one of world’s 1,000 best universities

Q

uacquarelli Symonds, a global university rating institution, recently released its report, QS World University Rankings 2020, based on surveys conducted on more than 1,620 universities around the world.

For the Jakarta-based Binus University, this year is historic. It ranks 801st on the list of 1,000 best universities in the world. Besides, Binus obtained four QS stars, the highest number among the nine Indonesian universities making it to the list.

“We thank the public, especially the media as one of our stakeholders which have spread the words about our achievements in particular and about latest developments in education in general. We hope this collaboration will continue,” said Binus University’ deputy rector on higher education affairs, George Wijaya Hadipoespito, in a media gathering on July 1.

The media conference on Binus’ latest various achievements was attended by the university’s vice president in charge of higher education, deputy rector in charge of student affairs & community development, and global director.

Binus University Rector Harjanto Prabowo also expressed his gratitude to all who have contributed their support that enable the private university to achieve global recognitions.

.

“We’re grateful for the trust from the government, the public and stakeholders.  We also tank all members of Binus academic community for their contribution for the education development in the country. This world ranking is not our main goal. It is our dedication to the national education that counts most,” Harjanto said.

Binus global director Diah Wihardini said the rating was established based on six indicators, namely academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), faculty student (20 percent), international faculty (5 percent), international students (5 percent).

The achievement is a gift as it was achieved in conjunction with its 38th anniversary on July 1, 2019. Over the last 38 years, Binus has been working hard to achieve its mission of empowering people through education.

Currently, the Binus academic community (Binusian) that consists of students, alumni and lecturers has more than 130,000 members.

Binus has also been rigorous in its social responsibility programs. Currently, more than 30,000 Binusians, mostly students and lecturers, have been involved in public empowerment through a program called “Teaching Indonesia”.  Activities include free tutoring for high school students, training for development of small- and medium-scale businesses, and development of village facilities.

Students have been encouraged to dedicate their work for social cause. For instance students of computer engineering have developed “Sonarvision” for people with blindness and visual impairments.

The equipment has also been made available to certain foundations in Indonesia. A digital library that Binus established helps students in remote areas to access educational contents without the internet and with minimum power consumption.

This year, Binus celebrates its 38th anniversary, holding a special ceremony to honor students with outstanding academic  achievements in both academic and non-academic fields. Called “Binus Celebration Night”, the ceremony was held on July 1, 2019 at Binus campus in Alam Sutera.

The appreciations were given to 272 achievements of various levels – 34 at the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek), 12 national, 4 ASEAN, 10 Asian and five world level.

“We hope that Binus 38th anniversary could highlight the achievements of Binusians. They have build Binus’ reputation nationally and internationally as well as made Binus a world-class university,” said Johan,  Binus deputy rector for student affairs & community development.

Binus University is a prominent university with an accreditation of A. It aims to achieve its target of making two of every three alumni entrepreneurs.

Students have the chance of not only studying on campus but also seeking experience from working with multinational companies through an  education program called “3+1”.

Under the 3+1 program, students study aon campus for three years and another year off campus. They can choose one of five options -- internship, community development, research, start-up outness and study abroad.
