ndriah Feby Misna, the energy ministry’s director of new and renewable energy and energy conservation, says the government is banking on green hydrogen to slash carbon emissions and provide employment.

“We are including green hydrogen usage in the renewable energy bill. Implementing regulations for green hydrogen, in the form of presidential or government regulations will be issued to support the adoption of hydrogen and ammonia,” she said in a webinar hosted by the Institute of Essential Services Reform (IESR) and broadcast live on Tuesday.

Southeast Asia’s largest economy hopes to use the energy carrier to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, meet the country’s decarbonization targets and become a global hydrogen export hub.

“Our geographical position is [suitable to develop] this hub,” Feby explained, adding that the ministry was looking at green hydrogen to encourage the creation of jobs, boost renewable energy adoption and attract foreign investment.

Hydrogen, like electricity, does not exist as a natural energy source but as a means of storing and transporting energy from other sources. Once produced, it can be utilized in fuel cells to generate electricity and heat, which could be an option for lower-carbon energy solutions.

In December 2023, Indonesia released the National Hydrogen Strategy (SHN) as a blueprint to boost hydrogen production and consumption in the country.
