ndonesia will mass produce a car brand of its own within three years, President Prabowo Subianto has declared, adding that funding and land for the manufacturing facilities has been secured.

“I’ve already allocated the budget and prepared the land for the factories. The team is now working on it,” Prabowo said during a plenary cabinet meeting marking his first year in office at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

“We’ve already produced an Indonesian-made jeep,” he added, referring to the Maung, a tactical 4x4 produced by state-owned weapons manufacturer PT Pindad. “Our officers and commanders are now proud to drive jeeps made in Indonesia. We no longer need to rely on foreign-made vehicles.”

Headquartered in Bandung, West Java, Pindad was designated a state-owned enterprise (SOE) in 1983 after previously operating as the Army’s production facility.

Pindad’s Maung was originally designed as a light tactical military vehicle and was later developed into several variants, including the MV3 Garuda Limousine, a sports utility vehicle with an elongated body and sunroof.

“And soon, all of you must drive Maung,” Prabowo told cabinet members and officials. “I don’t want to hear excuses, save your fancy cars for the weekends. When you’re off duty, then you can use them.”
