P

resident Prabowo Subianto has secured investment commitments worth 4 billion British pounds (US$5.37 billion) during his state visit to the United Kingdom, following meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III in London on successive days.

Prabowo met with Starmer at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday and King Charles at Lancaster House on Wednesday, as he seeks to boost foreign investment and deepen bilateral cooperation with the UK across key sectors such as the economy, environment and education.

Beyond investment commitments, Jakarta and London also agreed to strengthen maritime cooperation, which includes a plan to develop 1,582 fishing vessels in Indonesia.

“We want to invest on a large scale to improve fishing villages, raise the living standards of fishermen and increase national protein consumption,” Prabowo said at a press conference in London, footage of which was published on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.

“Three-quarters of our territory is ocean, yet protein consumption among our people is still too low. We want to improve this,” he said, emphasizing that enhanced maritime cooperation would help accelerate economic growth.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya told reporters in London that the fishing boat manufacturing project was expected to create around 600,000 jobs. Of these, around 400,000 would be tied directly to shipbuilding and 170,000 jobs would be created through a multiplier effect, while roughly 30,000 would be crewing jobs.
