here was a moment during The Jakarta Post's visit to Semesta's Gallery on Oct. 27 when Andra Semesta, the 32-year-old artist and the co-owner of the gallery, decided to offer a tour around the ins and outs of his compound.

The striking photos as posted on its Instagram account might have already illustrated how outdoorsy the gallery is. However, only when the visiting patrons get to explore it with their own eyes will they realize that Semesta's Gallery is more than just an art studio with a sweeping backyard.

"There was once a dance movement workshop on the second floor, but the showcase took place in the central garden here and the audiences sat around it," Andra told the Post as he pointed out the different loci of the gallery.

"We could always circumvent the compound, depending on what the artist-in-question wished. I would encourage them to make the best use of the compound."

Occupying a large plot akin to a sloping hill in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, Semesta's Gallery has steadily clinched a reputation as one of the most distinctive art galleries in the city.

By intermingling the gallery's quirky design courtesy of the late architecture maven Ahmad Djuhara and the voluminous frondescence reminiscent of a cottagecore autochrome, Semesta's Gallery might as well have what it takes to re-introduce the more conventional forms of arts to technology-obsessed Jakartans.

Semesta's Gallery is currently hosting a sculpture exhibition by the Indonesian Sculptors’ Association (API) Jakarta, called “Re-Generasi Sculpture Exhibition“. The exhibition takes place from Oct. 21 to Nov. 4, 2023.
