F

ormer Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) says the party is considering backing external candidates in the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election, including his erstwhile presidential rival, Anies Baswedan.

He said the PDI-P was open to supporting both members and nonmembers in November’s regional head elections.

All candidates “will go through a selection process" Ganjar said on Monday after Idul Adha prayers at his residence in Sleman, Yogyakarta, as quoted by tempo.co.

Ganjar said the PDI-P needed to ensure that Anies’ programs aligned with the party’s democratic values and ideology as part of its criteria.

"If he does not align with PDI-P values, then no need to force it," he added.

Anies, who was Jakarta governor in 2017-2022, came to the party’s attention after PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said the party needed to assess the candidates it might back in this year’s Jakarta gubernatorial election.

"For Jakarta, a very important and strategic area, we will thoroughly review all proposals, including Anies and even Pramono Anung, who has extensive experience," Hasto said on June 3 in Depok, West Java, referring to the incumbent cabinet secretary who is a PDI-P politician.
