The Bukit Barisan Military Command in North Sumatra promised to conduct transparently the investigation into the attack on a village in Deli Serdang regency allegedly committed by dozens of soldiers.
he military police have named 25 members of an Army battalion in Medan, North Sumatra, as suspects for allegedly storming Selamat village in Biru-biru district, Deli Serdang regency, in November.
The naming of the suspects took place around one month after the incident, after the Bukit Barisan Military Command’s military police investigated into the incident. The military police questioned 50 soldiers in their probe.
“Of the 50 personnel we interrogated, we’ve named half of them as suspects,” Bukit Barisan Military Command chief Lt. Gen. Mochammad Hasan said during a press briefing on Tuesday.
He added that the military police would hand over the case to Indonesian Military (TNI) prosecutors, who would write up the indictments against the suspects that would be submitted to a military tribunal.
Hasan asserted that the military police had received recommendations from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) in the case.
“The investigation is still ongoing as of today. The military police will make sure that the prosecution is completed,” he said, adding that he apologized on behalf of the TNI to the people, especially the victims, for the assault on Selamat village.
