he House of Representatives and the Transportation Ministry have celebrated this year’s Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) as one of the smoothest in recent years, with authorities preparing for the return flow this weekend.
Over the past week, the country has seen over 1.4 million vehicles leave Greater Jakarta for various regions, according to data from state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga.
After the peak of mudik on Saturday, National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) chief Insp. Gen. Agus Suryonugroho declared this year’s traffic operations a “success” given the significant decrease in traffic accidents compared to last year.
The police recorded 2,110 accidents between March 23 and Wednesday, the week containing the Idul Fitri holidays, which fell on Monday and Tuesday. The figure fell 21 percent from the 2,689 recorded last year.
Authorities also recorded 301 fatalities from mudik road accidents this year, down almost 25 percent from the 395 in the same period in 2024.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi celebrated the figures on Wednesday, saying they were the result of the hard work of his ministry, the National Police, local authorities and other related parties.
