R

egional administrations have increased security and rolled out measures to safeguard public order, as the country braces for continued protests and potential riots in the coming days.

Unrest has swept across multiple cities in recent days, sparked by public outrage over lawmakers’ lavish allowances, the government’s handling of the economy, and police brutality.

Protesters have set fire to government buildings and looted the homes of public officials in several regions and at least seven people have been killed in what is now considered the most violent wave of demonstrations the country has seen in years.

At least 20 regencies and cities across the country have imposed online learning in the coming days, including Banda Aceh, Aceh, Pekanbaru, Riau, Palembang, South Sumatra, Bandar Lampung, Lampung, Bogor and Bekasi in West Java, Jakarta, Tangerang, Banten, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Kediri in East Java, and Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Yusuf Masruh, Head of the Surabaya Education Agency in East Java, said the measure was taken not only to ensure students' physical safety but also to protect their psychological well-being.

"These past few days of unrest will inevitably affect students’ mental health. This remote learning policy will help them stay focused on their lessons and shield them from protest-related stress and distractions," he said on Sunday.

Yusuf added that the policy also aims to prevent children from getting involved in the increasingly dangerous demonstrations.
