t least five people have been killed following a toxic gas leak at a gold mine operated by state-owned miner PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) on Mount Pongkor in Nanggung district, Bogor regency, West Java.

Nanggung Police Chief Adj. Comr. Ucup Supriatna said authorities, together with an emergency response team from PT Antam, managed to recover the bodies of three victims from the site over the past two days.

All victims were residents of Urug village in Sukajaya district, approximately nine kilometers from the mine. They were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities on Mount Pongkor, just outside Antam’s official concession area.

“Two bodies were discovered in the early hours of Sunday, while another was found on Monday morning,” Ucup said on Monday, as quoted by Antaranews.

The recovery took place nearly a week after the gas leak was first reported, as the victims were located in an unstable area that remained filled with toxic gas, making rescue efforts extremely dangerous.

“The conditions were extremely dangerous. One rescuer was injured when falling rocks struck his shoulder during the operation,” Ucup said.
