he Environment Ministry has sealed two companies accused of polluting the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan, as the government intensifies efforts to protect the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), whose population continues to decline due to human activities.
Environment Minister Hanif Faisal Nurofiq said the companies, identified only as PT GBE and PT ML, are suspected of violating environmental regulations and contributing to the degradation of the Irrawaddy dolphin’s habitat.
PT GBE, which operates in coal transportation and trading, allegedly constructed a jetty along the Mahakam River without obtaining the required environmental permits, in breach of prevailing environmental laws.
Meanwhile, PT ML, which conducts coal ship-to-ship transfer operations, allegedly failed to obtain the required spatial utilization approval prior to placing and mooring its coal transshipment barges.
“We have taken firm action by temporarily halting the operations of both companies,” Hanif said in a statement on Wednesday.
He emphasized that the ministry will continue to strengthen supervision and law enforcement to ensure that all activities along the Mahakam River fully comply with environmental regulations.
“These measures are essential to safeguarding the river’s ecosystem and protecting endemic species in East Kalimantan, including the Irrawaddy dolphin,” he said.
