engkulu's Rejang Lebong Regent Muhammad Fikri Thobari allegedly sought kickbacks from companies handling infrastructure projects in the regency to fund his Idul Fitri holiday expenses, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed.
KPK Deputy for Enforcement and Execution Asep Guntur Rahayu said the alleged scheme began in February, when Fikri and several regional officials conspired to appoint certain companies as winners of construction tenders for projects managed by the Rejang Lebong Public Works, Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (PUPRPKP).
“In return, the companies were expected to provide kickbacks amounting to 10–15 percent of the total project value,” Asep said during a press conference on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The companies involved include PT Statika Mitra Sarana, CV Manggala Utama and CV Alpagker Abadi.
After securing the tenders, Fikri allegedly contacted the companies and requested partial payments of the agreed kickbacks to cover personal expenses ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday, which is expected to fall on March 20, pending the official moon sighting.
“Regional heads often have the custom of giving holiday bonuses to their subordinates from their personal funds. This burden prompted him to ask for an initial payment,” Asep said.
