resident Prabowo Subianto spent part of the Idul Fitri celebrations in Aceh, where he touted a swift recovery in the province hardest hit by last year’s deadly floods and landslides in northern Sumatra, even as evacuees lamented persistent gaps in government aid.
Prabowo traveled to Aceh Tamiang in Aceh on Saturday and joined around 1,300 worshipers for Idul Fitri prayers at the Darussalam Mosque in a temporary housing complex, observing the Islamic celebration at the end of Ramadan that fell on the weekend.
Four months ago, in late November of last year, a rare tropical cyclone triggered devastating floods and landslides that swept across Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, killing more than 1,200 people and forcing thousands into temporary shelters as houses were destroyed.
After the prayer on Saturday, the President claimed that post-disaster recovery progress in Aceh Tamiang had been “very fast”, noting that it was nearly complete.
“There are no more people in tents. One hundred percent [of evacuees] have left the tents and moved into temporary or permanent housing,” Prabowo told reporters.
The President also noted that infrastructure recovery, including electricity, is nearly complete across Aceh, with work remaining in five villages due to challenging conditions.
“[But] aid packages have been delivered to all residents, thank God,” he said.
