View all search resultsEach year, millions of visitors flock to the country’s coastline, one of the longest in the world. Many beaches, however, still lack adequate safety measures, including lifeguards and warning signs, leaving swimmers vulnerable to accidents and fatalities.
wave of drowning incidents during the Idul Fitri holiday period has left at least 12 people dead and two others missing across the country, highlighting persistent safety gaps at many of the nation’s beaches.
Three people died on Alor Tenda Biru Beach in Sukabumi regency, West Java, on Monday after being swept away by strong waves, officials said.
Akhmad Rizkiansah, head of operations and alert at Jakarta’s Search and Rescue Agency, said the incident began when Aden, 8, visiting the beach with his family, was swept into the water while playing near the shore. His father, 30-year-old Ujang Abdullah, and a local fisherman, 26-year-old Ace, rushed to rescue him but were also caught by the waves.
“The bodies of Aden and Ujang were recovered shortly after the incident. Ace’s body was found the next morning about 150 meters from the shore,” he said on Tuesday as quoted by Kompas.com.
In East Aceh regency, Aceh, four children drowned at Kuala Peudawa Beach on Monday while swimming during their school holiday. Authorities said 13-year-old Naura, 10-year-old Agustina, 8-year-old M. Afdhal, and 12-year-old Aliya entered the water at low tide but were swept away by rising currents.
Local residents tried to rescue the children, but they were dead by the time they were pulled from the water."
Also on Monday, 17-year-old tourist Muhammad Alfareza drowned at Mandiri Sejati Beach in West Pesisir regency, Lampung. He and two others were caught by waves around 8 a.m. while swimming.
