M

edan Haj Embarkation sent off 360 pilgrims as the first haj flight group from Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, at 3:10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The head of the Haj and Umrah Ministry’s North Sumatra regional office, Zulkifli Sitorus, said Medan would process 5,922 pilgrims in 17 flight groups. The embarkation only processes pilgrims from North Sumatra.

He said this year’s pilgrims had a better health profile than those of previous years.

“In general, only 30 percent of the pilgrims were recorded as being high risk,” he told The Jakarta Post after seeing off the first group of pilgrims, who were from the cities of Binjai and Medan.

“This is an indication that the pilgrims already have made thorough physical and mental preparations,” he said.

“With a healthy condition like this, Insya’allah [God willing], the haj this year will be solemn and smooth without any problems.”

He added that the departure this year was different because the pilgrims were no longer departing and arriving through the airport’s cargo terminal but through the international terminal. This will allow the pilgrims to access the aircraft using aerobridges.
