View all search resultsThe Batam city administration and BRIN have agreed to develop the botanical gardens, already popular among visitors, into a strategic ecotourism attraction and enrichment center to promote plant conservation and biodiversity.
he administration of Batam city is aiming to develop Batam Botanical Gardens into an icon of ecotourism in Riau Islands province, in cooperation with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), as expressed in a meeting on Wednesday.
Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad and R. Hendrian, deputy chair for utilization of research and innovation at the BRIN, agreed during their meeting in Batam to develop the city’s botanical gardens as a strategic follow-up based on a memorandum of understanding.
Also attending the meeting were BRIN research and innovation partnership director Asep Riswoko as well as several city officials.
The mayor emphasized Batam’s commitment to accelerating development cooperation of the gardens, which he said had huge potential for developing further, especially in terms of legal certainty of land rights and integrated management.
“The presence of Batam Botanical Gardens is strategic,” Amsakar said in a statement, released on April 29 by the city administration.
“In addition to plant conservation and enrichment center, it can also be a leverage for tourism,” he said, adding that development in coordination with a mass publication would have a significant impact on increasing visitor numbers.
The mayor also stressed the importance of BRIN’s support in accelerating the cooperation, especially in managing the gardens, strengthening research and expanding the plant collection.
