During a livestreamed press briefing on Monday, Health Ministry acting director general for disease control Andi Saguni said health authorities were bolstering their screening of international travelers coming into the country through ships or airplanes for the zoonotic virus.
“Surveillance is of utmost importance right now,” Andi said in the press briefing.
“To do so, we are screening travelers using thermal scanners, visual inspections and the All Indonesia app,” he added, referring to the government’s health declaration for every arriving international passenger.
Airport authorities are also imposing stricter surveillance with their screening of direct flights from countries where hantavirus cases have been identified, including the United States, Argentina, Uruguay and Panama.
“Those are the four [originating] countries for which we’re implementing extra stringent controls [...] but we’re not ruling out the possibility of new cases, in which case we’ll add them to our surveillance target,” said Naning Nugrahini, head of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s Health Quarantine Center, in Banten, Tangerang, on Monday as quoted by Antara.
