Perempuan Tanah Jahanam was chosen out of 59 Indonesian films by the Oscar Submission Selection Committee in Indonesia to represent the country at the 2021 Academy Awards.
ndonesian horror film Perempuan Tanah Jahanam (Impetigore, 2019) has been selected to represent Indonesia in the nominee selection phase for the 2021 Academy Awards Best International Feature Film category.
Helmed and penned by Joko Anwar, Perempuan Tanah Jahanam was chosen out of 59 Indonesian films by the Oscar Submission Selection Committee in Indonesia led by celebrated filmmaker Garin Nugroho.
“Hopefully this film can be a good representation and raise the international audiences’ interest in Indonesian films,” Joko said in a statement.

The film was a collaboration between Indonesian film company BASE Entertainment, Indonesian production house Rapi Films, Los Angeles-based production house Ivanhoe Pictures and South Korean production house CJ Entertainment.
BASE Entertainment producer Shanty Harmayn expressed her enthusiasm by saying, “Perempuan Tanah Jahanam keeps surprising us, starting from being screened at Sundance Film Festival [2020] to the Academy Awards. This is a testament of how local elements in the movie can be accepted by the global film industry.”
The film dominated the 2020 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) nomination process by receiving a total of 17 nominations, including for Best Feature Film. It won the Méliès International Festivals Federation (MIFF) Award for Best Asian Film at the 2020 Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in South Korea.

Perempuan Tanah Jahanam follows the journey of Maya (Tara Basro) in search of the truth about her family in a secluded village alongside her friend, Dini (Marissa Anita). Mysterious incidents occur after they arrive at the village and little do they know that the whole village is hunting them for a horrifying plan. The film also features actors Ario Bayu, Christine Hakim and Asmara Abigail.
Indonesian films that have been selected to represent the country at the Oscars in recent years include Mouly Surya’s Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts) and Garin Nugroho’s Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku (Memories of My Body). (wir/wng)
