A pardons board chaired by Malaysia's king before he ended his reign last week halved a 12-year jail sentence and cut fines for Najib, who is imprisoned for graft and money laundering related to the scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). The board did not give a reason for its decision.
The businessman, popularly known as Jho Low, was the alleged mastermind in a scheme that funnelled billions of dollars stolen from the Malaysian state investment fund into US luxury real estate, fine art, and Hollywood films in the 2010s.
Now, Anwar, 75, is hitting the national campaign trail again, trying to convince Malaysians to vote for him in the Nov. 19 election as he looks to finally fulfil his long-held dream of becoming prime minister.
