The scandal has landed a heavy blow on the administration, especially given President Prabowo Subianto’s vow to wage a relentless war against corruptors who undermine his government.
Sudewo is charged with extorting officials appointed to fill various positions in 401 village administrations in 21 districts across Pati and taking bribes from railway track projects at the Transportation Ministry’s Railway Directorate General in 2022.
Deputy Immigration and Corrections Minister Silmy Karim, who also served as the immigration director general between 2023 and 2024, allegedly received around Rp 100 million (US$5,567) per week from extortion fees related to stay permit issuance for foreigners.
Prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have demanded a five-year prison sentence for former deputy manpower minister Immanuel “Noel” Ebenezer over extortion schemes tied to workplace safety certifications at the ministry.
