City-owned transportation company PT MRT Jakarta gears up to extend Jakarta’s first subway line with a 6.3-kilometer-long northbound underground tunnel, amid concerns that construction may cut through a number of historical sites and buildings situated along the route.
The ambitious fully underground construction plan for the second phase of the Jakarta MRT faces a stumbling block resulting from a lack of interest by construction firms in working on such a complex project combined with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials have said.
MRT Jakarta, the operator of the country’s first subway service, plans to commence construction of a 2.8 km underground tunnel from Bundaran HI to the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta in June, known as stage CP201. The plan was pushed back from March and was expected to be completed by December 2024.
