The abrupt closure of an art exhibition at Jakarta’s National Gallery exploring themes related to former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has sparked concerns about the direction of freedom of expression in the country.
A gecko painted high above the wall is an example. For many, the animal might seem a ubiquitous sight. But it was as pivotal as Sicovecas’ other colorful paintings on canvas to make the gallery feel like home.
A sign below the desk reveals its purpose: "This memorial honors the brave men and women who broke into the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021 to loot, urinate, and defecate throughout those hallowed halls in order to overturn an election."
